  • The Congress is equally committed to making a comeback after ten years out of power in Haryana, where the ruling BJP is vying for a third term in a row. The political dialogue leading up to the assembly elections in Delhi, Maharashtra, and Jharkhand could be influenced by this poll, which marks the first major clash between the two national parties since the Lok Sabha elections.
  • In the 90 Seat Haryana legislature, 67.90% of voters cast ballots. Although exit polls have projected a Congress victory, the BJP is still optimistic about beating these odds. Nayab Singh Saini, the chief minister, has rejected the findings of the exit poll and maintained that his party will win a majority in order to retake power. “On October 8, we will form the government, and the Congress will once again blame the Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs),” Saini stated. In the meantime, two-time former chief minister and Congress leader Bhupinder Singh Hooda, who is expected to be the party’s nominee for president, has voiced a similar sense of optimism, stating that “a comfortable majority for Congress is in sight.”
  • Although other parties including the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), Indian National Lok Dal (INLD), and Jannayak Janta Party (JJP) have entered the race, the Haryana assembly elections have primarily been a bipolar struggle between the BJP and Congress. Leaders of these regional parties, such Dushyant Chautala of the JJP and Abhay Chautala of the INLD, have asserted that in the event of a hung parliament, their alliances are ready to act as kingmakers. Arvind Kejriwal, the leader of the AAP, has asserted that the AAP is necessary for the formation of any administration.
  • From Garhi Sampla-Kiloi to Adampur and from Ladwa to Ambala, there were several well-publicized fights. Key contenders include political heavyweights including JJP leader Dushyant Chautala, Leader of the Opposition Hooda, and Chief Minister Saini. Family conflicts have been witnessed in the state, as cousins Shruti Choudhry (BJP) and Anirudh Choudhary are running against each other in Tosham, while Devi Lal’s grandson Aditya Devi Lal (INLD) is against JJP candidate Digvijay Singh Chautala in Dabwali.

  • While the opposition Congress has attacked the current government on problems like unemployment, farmer hardship, and inflation, the BJP has campaigned on a platform of excellent governance, merit-based jobs, and assistance measures for farmers. The outcome will be a critical yardstick for evaluating the BJP’s governing model, especially in light of the party’s leadership transition earlier this year, which saw Saini succeed Manohar Lal Khattar as chief minister.
  • The union territory of Jammu and Kashmir is getting ready to elect its first government since Article 370 was repealed in 2019, and today’s counting is the last stage of a historic electoral process. Three waves of voting were used to fight this election, and the overall turnout was 63.45%, slightly lower than the 65.52 percent seen in the 2014 elections.
  • The Congress-NC alliance, according to exit polls, is expected to come out on top, with NC poised to win the lion’s share of seats. However, the BJP is also projected to improve on its previous tally of 25 seats, and the PDP, which won 28 seats in the 2014 elections, is predicted to fare much worse this time. If needed, NC leader Farooq Abdullah has already signalled a willingness to align with the PDP to form a government, though he has ruled himself out of the race for chief minister.
  • The political drama surrounding Jammu and Kashmir’s elections is not limited to coalition possibilities. A recent move to allow the Lieutenant Governor to nominate members to five reserved seats in the assembly has sparked controversy, with opposition parties accusing the BJP of pre-result manipulation.
  • As counting proceeds in both Haryana and Jammu & Kashmir, political leaders, parties, and citizens alike are glued to the results that will shape the future of these states. Will the BJP secure a third term in Haryana, or will Congress manage a comeback? And in Jammu and Kashmir, will the Congress-NC alliance take the reins, or will the BJP spring a surprise?
